A dynamic workspace for Viasat + Inmarsat in London, that embodies innovation, global connectivity, and employee well-being.

Year
2024

Viasat + Inmarsat is a world-leading provider of global mobile satellite communications. Their networks are pivotal in connecting communities, companies, and countries, especially in remote or challenging environments where terrestrial connectivity can be a challenge. Viasat + Inmarsat's services support various sectors, including emergency services, aviation, maritime, and environmental monitoring, providing dependable communication solutions when they are needed most.

Our project at Viasat + Inmarsat's London office was an extensive undertaking aimed at integrating the company's values, technological prowess, and vision into their physical space, through a series of artworks, installations, and wayfinding systems. We set out to enhance employee wellness, create a peaceful and collaborative work environment, and bring Inmarsat's brand and services to life through innovative designs and artworks.

Art in Symphony

The overarching theme for the project is "Symphony," representing the harmony within Inmarsat's network. This concept was central to the creative approach, illustrating how various elements of Viasat + Inmarsat's services work together seamlessly to provide reliable communication worldwide. A coherent artwork, curation, and wayfinding scheme were developed to enrich the experience within the new space. This involved creating a series of artworks and signage that were functional and visually appealing, reflecting the harmony and interconnectedness of Viasat + Inmarsat's operations.

The centrepiece of the lobby area is a large ceiling installation, made up of hexagonal patterns used to symbolise how Inmarsat’s satellites map the Earth. This artwork features dynamic lighting that mimics a 24-hour day-to-night cycle, reflecting the continuous operation of their satellite network. The installation is particularly impressive at night, designed to create a prominent, town hall-like area that was publicly viewable and inviting for both employees, visitors, and passersby.

The Impact

The project prioritises creating a workspace that promotes employee well-being. This was achieved by designing peaceful, neurodiverse-friendly spaces that encourage collaboration and the use of the entire building. The inclusion of breakout areas, meeting rooms, and quiet zones ensured that the diverse needs of Viasat + Inmarsat's workforce were met. Their mission to connect the world for good was a significant driver of the design.

The artwork and design elements were chosen to inspire and energise staff and visitors, highlighting Viasat + Inmarsat's role in pioneering space technology and providing critical communication solutions. The design also aimed to make their intangible services tangible. By using data visualisation and thematic artwork, the offices are transformed into a living representation of Viasat + Inmarsat's services and achievements.
