Light in Motion was an immersive experience that pushed the boundaries of modern design and technology. Hosted at The Art House, and presented by Acrylicize.
Curated by Sean Malikides of Kai Lab and Jessie Temple of Whatever Together, Light in Motion featured works by Kai Lab, Duncan Carter, Heyl & Van Dam, Maria Vera, Relative Distance, Sophie Mei Birkin, Star Holden, Will Laslett, and Will Muir Llia - all of whom explored light, space, movement, and time through a series of collectible design objects, durational artworks, and kinetic installations. Alongside this, a set of exciting events and workshops were programmed jointly by Acrylicize and the exhibtion team and hosted at The Art House, as well as a comprehensive marketing campaign and brand identity, which was developed to define and promote the show.
Exhibition
Described by CULTURE Whisper as “a dazzling exhibition of precision technology with original artistic vision,” the show featured artists from diverse backgrounds in architecture, engineering, software development, and design. Each piece was showcased individually, but thoughtfully curated to allow for a natural interplay between the works and the overall exhibition space. The show saw a full takeover of the entire ground floor of The Art House, transforming it into a totally immersive experience.
Creative Programming
Light in Motion featured a series of programmed events that deepened engagement with the artists, their work, and the overarching themes of the exhibition. Attendees were able to delve further into the ideas presented in the show, and explore their own relationships with design, technology, light, and motion, through a private view, artist talk, and a brace of weekend workshops. These events brought the exhibition to life in new and exciting ways, adding extra layers to the show and directly involving the London Design Festival community.
Campaign and Brand Identity
The brand identity for Light in Motion, developed in-house by Acrylicize, was designed to be elegant and simple. We intentionally pared back the identity to let the artworks take centre stage, with the brand offering subtle context throughout all digital and printed assets. The marketing campaign had to draw visitors into an area that sits just outside the usual festival bounds, and was driven by video, giving a glimpse of the works, without revealing too much. Stunning photography, simple graphics and a bank of banners, posters and print collateral provided a suite of content to raise the profile of Light in Motion.
The Space
The Art House, Acrylicize’s home in East London, played a crucial role in providing the atmosphere for Light in Motion. The versatility of The Art House made it an ideal venue for the show. The main gallery provided ample space for hanging installations and plinths, while the blackout room offered a controlled environment for works that required precise lighting. The event space allowed for talks and workshops, and the DJ booth, used during select events, meant we could provide more of a party atmosphere when needed.
